The Next Generation of Personal Protective Equipment

What if PPE had the ability to not only protect but to eliminate pathogens?

Personal Protective Equipments (PPE), are an essential tools to protect the general population, especially healthcare workers, from hazards illnesses in the workspace. Face Mask, Gloves, Gowns, Head Cover and Rubber boots are used daily to reduce health care personnel exposure to pathogens or other toxic materials in the clinical environment.

Although PPE  intend of use is to protect and ensure a safe environment, in reality they are misused commonly in clinical practices, which lead to increase infections and health related risks to the clinician.

A study that was conducted by researchers from  Duke University Medical Center tested the amount of bacteria carried in healthcare uniforms  after one shift? Researcher have managed to test cultures from the sleeves, pockets and midriffs of the nurse’s scrubs, in order to examine if the scrubs and their environment (Bad sheets, Medical supply carts, and rails, etc)  acquired organisms during the shift.

They found that on average, in each shift there were seven types of bacteria transmitted, including drug-resistance ones, such as Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Acinetobacter baumannii, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The statistical analysis showed that  5% of the cases  were transmitted from the patient to the nurse, and additional 5% of the cases  bacteria were passed from the room to the nurse.

Those findings shade light on the connection between hospital acquired infections and medical wear,  and emphasize the need for a  new approach for managing hospital acquired infections. A method that is safe for the healthcare personnel, with long term action and highly efficacy  against broad spectrum of microbes.
